wednesday, june 2, 2010. one good thing to come of everyone being sick is that i got a lot of READING done. book club is on hold until august because of summer vacations. so, my non book club book is THE SHACK. a friend gave it to us to garage sale a while back and i ended up keeping it. i thought it would be a few years before i'd tackle it, but now that i like to read, i'm finding time for it. it's another page turner. i was hooked right from the start. i'm a little more than half way done. will post when i am finished.

ok. just to recap. my last post was about how I ACTUALLY READ A BOOK for the 1st time in like 15 years and at the end i mentioned that i had a phobia about public speaking. i was pretty nervous about discussing my thoughts about the book, recalling all the horrible memories of getting called on and put on the spot in high school. i used to experience a lot of ANXIETY as well. when i'd get called on my face would turn bright red, my chest and arms would get all blotchy and my heart would race. what i failed to realize is that the people i'd be discussing the book with on this particular night were my FRIENDS. not a teacher who was going to be grading me or peers judging me!!! i also worried about my poor retention of material. i think i remembered so much about this book because i thoroughly enjoyed it (and the fact that i just finished it the day before probably helped). it wasn't a boring text book forced on me as a requirement. i forgot how when i did read those 5 books oh so long ago, they too were enjoyable. i especially LOVED talking about the book and hearing EVERYONE ELSE'S REACTIONS. it's just one more thing we girlie's all have in common now. Reading a book that was so dirty/racey and everyone admitting to liking it totally cracks me up! my intent for this blog post was not to right a review of the book, because, thank GOD, i'm not in school anymore. but, rather just right about MY EXPERIENCE. i will, however, attempt to post a link to a review in case others are interested. http://www.amazon.com/Choke-Chuck-Palahniuk/dp/0307388921/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273028407&sr=1-1i want to THANK all my fellow book club girlie's for your friendship and for encouraging me to come. it feels good to be part of the reading population again! it's actually a major BREAKTHROUGH (YAY for me). i can't wait to find out what the next book is. now if only i can get over my PHOBIA of hosting! just kidding.
i can't believe it...I READ A BOOK!
friday, may 21, 2010. my neighborhood started the "SHERWOOD VILLAGE BOOK CLUB" many many months ago. i hadn't read a whole book from cover to cover in about 15 years, so i didn't have any interest in joining. however, after the book is discussed it turns more into a social event. lots of gabbing over wine and nummy nibbles. so, with some encouragement from my neighbor girlie's i went to my 1st book club meeting in january. turns out, not many of the ladies actually get to read the book in it's entirety. whether it be not enough time to read the book because of family or work duties/responsibilities, or just not digging the book from the get go, not everyone finishes. some books that were picked prior to this months were between 5 and 600 pages. with two toddlers, i couldn't even imagine finding the time to read that much. i must be honest. i have some sort of reading disability. some sort of reading for comprehension problem i've struggled with all my life. (ADD?) i used to go to tutoring for it as a child. i used to cheat in my "program readers" because i didn't want to be behind. (perfectionist) i'm talking cheating in the 1st grade!!! i never read any assigned books in highshcool. i wrote every book report strictly from cliff notes. it's a wonder i ever graduated from high school, let alone college!!! well, to my surprise i checked this months book "CHOKE" by Chuck Palahniuk out from the library. at 293 pages it seemed less daunting than the others. i started reading it one night after the kiddos went to bed and i was hooked! it's a fast read (well, relatively fast considering i read as slow as molasses). it's also pretty dirty too, so it's not for the prudish. (not that i'm not prudish) anyway, to make a long story long, i FINISHED it today. i feel this is a huge ACCOMPLISHMENT for me. i've read only 5 books of fiction in their entirety and that was in my late teens, early 20's. a couple john saul's, one dean koontz, and two kurt vonnegute's. i can't wait to go to book club this month and discuss it. now, if i can only get over my phobia of "PUBLIC SPEAKING";)
